Shoes and bags from fashion brand bonprix receive PETA-Approved Vegan certification
press release
•02.02.2021
An international fashion company is moving with the times. The majority of bonprix's range of shoes and bags has been certified as animal-friendly with the {PETA-Approved-Vegan} certificate: 75 per cent of bonprix's own-brand range of shoes and 95 per cent of its bags have been certified as vegan by PETA. The animal rights organisation welcomes the commitment of the company, which, as part of the Otto Group, pledged not to sell fur products back in 1991. With the recent labelling of vegan products, bonprix is continuing its commitment to animal welfare.
"With the {PETA-Approved-Vegan} certification, bonprix makes it easy for its customers to buy animal-friendly fashion. The label makes it possible to see at a glance which products can be purchased without hesitation. More and more people are consciously choosing a vegan lifestyle and, with it, animal-friendly fashion. We congratulate bonprix on this step and call on other major fashion retailers to follow suit," said Frank Schmidt, Head of Corporate Affairs at PETA.
From now on, vegan shoes and bags in all 30 international markets of bonprix will be labelled with the {PETA-Approved-Vegan} certificate. This guarantees over 35 million customers that the products are manufactured without the use of animal-derived ingredients. To ensure this, the certified suppliers are regularly and strictly monitored by the internal quality management team.
The proportion of vegan shoes in the company's own brands is set to increase from 75 per cent to 85 to 90 per cent in the coming months. Based on sales figures for 2020, the fashion retailer estimates that it will sell over 2 million pairs of {PETA-Approved-Vegan} shoes this year, thereby helping to further establish the certificate on the market.
"As an international fashion brand, we are delighted to use our reach to work with PETA to raise awareness of the important issue of vegan fashion. We too have noticed that conscious consumption is becoming increasingly important to our customers and want to respond to their needs. With the {PETA-Approved-Vegan} certification, we are creating even more product transparency and a sense of security for our customers who choose vegan shoes and bags," says Rien Jansen, Managing Director of bonprix Handelsgesellschaft and responsible for purchasing, marketing and retail, commenting on the cooperation with the international animal rights organisation.
Background information
To help companies and consumers navigate vegan fashion, PETA UK introduced the {PETA-Approved-Vegan} logo in 2013. PETA Germany also advises fashion brands and designers on critical animal-derived substances and alternative materials and assists them in obtaining certification from PETA USA. The logo provides customers with easy guidance, whether online or in-store. More than 1,000 fashion brands and designers worldwide have already had products or collections certified with the {PETA-Approved-Vegan} logo, including ESPRIT, Zalando, Topshop and now bonprix. PETA is committed to ensuring that animals are no longer exploited or killed for clothing. Hidden animal products are mostly buttons made of horn or mother-of-pearl, small leather appliqués on jeans or shoes and, above all, waxes, oils and animal adhesives based on casein or bone. However, thanks to a wide range of synthetic and plant-based alternatives such as Lyocell, for example Tencel or Modal, acrylic, kapok, pineapple leather or imitation leather, any item of clothing can be produced vegan. Garments such as cotton shirts or classic denim are usually vegan anyway.
PETA's motto is, in part: Animals are not here for us to wear or exploit in any other way. The organisation campaigns against speciesism – a worldview that classifies humans as superior to all other living beings.
